My wife and I had a great dinner to end 2011 on tonight at Old Hickory Steakhouse at Gaylord Opryland Resort. During Christmas season there’s not just great Christmas lights, ICE! and DreamWorks animation characters around, there’s fantastic gluten free dining too! Each of Gaylord Opryland’s restaurants has gluten free options, some even gluten free bread and beer. Old Hickory, while not offering a specific gluten free menu, the chef will come by and walk you through all the options ensuring there is plenty for you to enjoy!

Tonight we started off with the Lobster and Corn Bisque, well… after we started off with a glass of wine of course. I’m one of those people who when I see any bisque on the menu, I have to ask. Knowing that other Gaylord properties have this on the gluten free menu at their Old Hickory Steakhouse, I was looking forward to it and boy, did it deliver. All the rich and creamy bisqueness anyone could ask for!

Filet Mignon

Next up was dinner. We both had the 8 oz. filet mignon topped with Maytag bleu cheese with asparagus and hollandaise sauce and bleu cheese and thyme potatoes au gratin as sides. When we talked to the chef, the potatoes had to be altered, so make sure your waiter know about your gluten allergy to ensure that you don’t have problems later.

Overall, everything was absolutely fabulous! As I’m typing this, I’m still basking in the glow of the meal. If you get a chance and have a special occasion coming up, I highly recommend celebrating it at Old Hickory!

Locations: Gaylord Opryland Resort in Donelson, TN
Price: $$$$$

My favorite place for lunch downtown or off 8th is Fiddlecakes. In the mood for a sandwich, chips and a cookie? They can hook you up. My favorite is the Standard with grilled chicken, provolone, spinach, roasted red peppers and veganaise. Just let them know you are celiac and they will make sure everything is cleaned before they prepare your meal to ensure there’s no cross contamination. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Depending on the day, they have gluten free cupcakes, lemon bars, muffins, brownies and cookies. If you let them know in advance you can even order up a full loaf of fresh bread.

Fiddlecakes has two locations, one at 2206 8th ave. South and one at Cummins station, 300A 10th ave. South

Price: $$

So for the food that is most likely the hardest to do out gluten free I find myself recently eating at a lot of Italian restaurants that end up having a gluten free menu. A great place to take the family is the Old Spaghetti Factory down on 2nd avenue. It’s been there for years, I think one of the only restaurants that is still on 2nd sine I moved to Nashville in 1989. They can substitute any pasta dish with a gluten free corn pasta that is cooked separately to avoid cross contamination. It’s a great, low expense nice meal for the fam except for the fact that most of the time you will have to pay for parking downtown to enjoy.

Anyway, I heard they had a gluten free menu, but was still a little scared as I always am trying some place that is mainly gluten heavy. The staff was very helpful and I have to say it was some of the best damn gluten free pasta I have had. I highly recommend it.

My wife and I went to Maggiano’s this weekend to enjoy their gluten free menu options. Everything was great! The staff was very helpful in letting us know what we could order on the menu and even helped us change some menu items around to be gluten free. They can substitute Corn fusilli in any of their non-stuffed pasta dishes or they can create a customized meal just for you! We had the new gilled artichoke without the bread crumbs and it was fantastic. Thanks to everyone at Maggiano’s for a great evening!

The restaurant is a cute place where people cook their own breakfast on a griddle built into your table. The nephews, 4 and 12, had a great time experiencing that. They have a gluten free pancake mix that was really good and all you can eat for $6.99 adults, kids 10 and under are $4.99. Of course to avoid cross contamination everyone at your table has to eat gluten free, but when you’re buying for the nephews, they can eat what you get
