So, I haven’t been eating out at all recently so sorry no updates! I did run out to lunch today though and grabbed one of my favorite things, the grilled steak salad at Lenny’s. I use to love philly cheese steaks and well, not I miss them. Thanks to Lenny’s, now I can basically have one, just without the bread. After a year of not having a philly cheese steak… you won’t miss the bread at all!

Knob Creek

Being from Kentucky, I have always been a huge bourbon fan. When I was diagnosed with Celiacs 2 years ago I thought this may hinder my enjoyment of bourbon. When I read up on it, it looked as if bourbon was OK for celiacs since the distilling process removed most everything that is bad for us. Recently I got to wondering if it was still true. Thanks to the folks at Knob Creek for responding with the email below.

Michael,

Thanks for asking about a potential allergic reaction to gluten in our bourbon products.

Our bourbon is made from the fermentation of corn, rye and malted barley. The fermented “beer,” as it’s called in the trade, is then distilled and aged in oak barrels. While gluten can be found in the small grains, such as rye, barley, oats, etc., the process of distillation generally excludes gluten in the finished product.

People with celiac disease may have a permanent intolerance to gluten. Beam Global Spirits and Wine does not advise legal age adults about whether or not to drink our products; this is a decision you may want to discuss with your physician if you have any questions. Your physician may be able to provide personalized advice about your question, based on the ingredients and processes that go into making our bourbon.

Since 1987, October has been Celiac Disease Awareness Month. If you know anyone with Celiac, share a positive experience, share information about where you eat/shop, talk to restaurant managers/grocery store managers about products they carry, thank them for carrying what they do, spread the word.

So I finally was able to try out Matteo’s Gluten Free Pizza out in Cool Springs. While I truly appreciate the trouble they went through to create this and know they use top quality ingredients, I have to say it is far from my favorite. I had the Italian sausage one and my wife had one with black olives. The sausage was large pieces, I generally prefer crumbled. The crust reminded me of a thick whole wheat crust, I prefer thin crust. So all in all, it was not a hit with me. I do, however, think this would be perfect for children or a party that you need to get something together quick for. If you truly want a great pizza in Nashville, I still think you need to take the time to go to Whole Foods and grab a pizza crust to make your own or go to Dad’s Gluten Free Pizza.

Normally I just write about Nashville gluten free menus, but I’m in Vegas this week and thought I was going to be out of luck at a business dinner at China Grill. To my surprise, and the waitress’, they had a gluten free menu. Be sure to ask if you visit! It was a great meal. And thank for treating me Omniture!

After accepting that you can no longer have regular break, pizza, pasta and all that other good stuff you then realize that you also can’t have other things because of contamination. I remember thinking, “It’s all OK, I can still have french fries at fast food restaurants, eat lots of sushi, I should be all good.” Then you find out that soy sauce has wheat and french fries are fried with other breaded stuff and contaminated. Well, there are a few places we can go have fries! For a nice meal, Brick Tops uses a dedicated fryer for their fries so you can enjoy a great burger, bun-less of course, and fries. Chick-fil-A also uses dedicated fryers. So, while they might not really be good for you, they are gluten-free. Enjoy!

While most Italian good is normally off limits, Sole Mio is there to help. While they do not carry rice noodles, they do offer to help make most of the items gluten free and are very friendly. I highly recommend the Insalata Di Mare and the Prosciutto e Melone for apps and Pesce del Giornio for dinner. The staff was very helpful, after wine it is a little pricy though.

So, for the first time last night I had Ethiopian food. We ate at Gojo at 415 W. Thompson Lane in Nashville. I have to say it was great. The staff was great and very helpful with my gluten issue. Their injera bread is made with teff (which is gluten free) but they do mix it so stay away. The meats are great though and they were able to suggest things that I could have and made sure mine was separated from the other folks I was eating with. I highly recommend them!

I love meetings

Actually that was sarcasm. Meetings take up way too much of my time, but for the next 3 days I am stuck in one. you know, the ones where they bring lunch in and there is not a gluten free option in site. I have my backpack stuffed with Larabar cashew bars and fruit sticks. The fun part about it is everybody who plans these meetings knows I have to have a gluten free option but when it comes to ordering lunch, they never remember.

Yellow Watermelon

I thought it was a bad watermelon at first and then promptly Googled it. A yellow watermelon is a real thing. It was really good, a little less sweet and a bit of a honey aftertaste. It does freak the brain out though! It looks like you are eating pineapple but tastes like watermelon.
