the Wild Cow

Last week we finally tried the Wild Cow over in east Nashville. They are a vegetarian restaurant that also has gluten free options (see gluten free menu here). I had a portabella mushroom sandwich and all I can say is wow! Don’t know which gluten free bread that they used but it was the best that I have had. I had a quinoa side that was also nice. I recommend trying it if you get. Chance!

Updated: The bread they use is from Aunt April’s Bakery and it rocks!

Suzy Wong’s House of Yum

Last week we finally tried Suzy Wong’s House of Yum at 1515 Church St. In Nashville. They have items noted on their menu as GF for gluten frill along with some vegetarian offerings. For the first time in years I was able to eat chicken wings out. While not a huge fan wings, it always sucks when you a re told you can not have something! They were good for wings, but reminded me of why I don’t really like them. We had some sushi and a great shrimp dish. Give it a try!

Maggiano’s Little Italy Gluten Free

My wife and I went to Maggiano’s this weekend to enjoy their gluten free menu options. Everything was great! The staff was very helpful in letting us know what we could order on the menu and even helped us change some menu items around to be gluten free. They can substitute Corn fusilli in any of their non-stuffed pasta dishes or they can create a customized meal just for you! We had the new gilled artichoke without the bread crumbs and it was fantastic. Thanks to everyone at Maggiano’s for a great evening!

The Mellow Mushroom gluten free pizza

Some times when I look at my post it feels as if all I write about is pizza and where I can find a gluten free version. Well… I like pizza, sorry ;-) I’ve been a little sad since the closure of Garlic Jim’s in Franklin. I live in the Donelson area so it wasn’t always convenient for me to make it out there but it was my favorite in town. Now I’m left searching for a new pizza place. With this, I’ve recently tried the gluten free pizza option at the Mellow Mushroom. Like Mafiaoza’s, the topping are great! Nothing like getting a pizza with high quality meat products on it! Sorry vegetarians, they do have veggie only options at both places though.

The issue I am having with ordering gluten free pizza out is that it takes a little longer to bake than a normal pizza and the fine folks that are helping us celiac’s out don’t realize that. For the umpteenth time I got a gluten free pizza with high promise only to have to go home and put it in the oven a little longer. The dough was spongy and just needed about 10 minutes longer to become perfect. Other than that, it was a great pizza on par weigh the others I have had recently.

I am grateful to every company that tries to make a gluten free pizza option, we owe you! Please take one word of advice though, cook it a little longer. I want a crust that will not fall apart when i try to fold it like a NY style slice of pie.

Bricktops on West End

Today I had lunch at Bricktops on West End. Before I had mentioned that the fries were gluten free, this is no longer the case. While we can’t get fries any longer, they do offer a gluten free menu. I had the salmon today and it was fantastic. Just ask your server for the menu, it was great and the staff was very helpful.

the Pfunky Griddle

While normally I stay away from people who use an image of wheat in their logo, we took the nephews to the Pfunky Griddle last weekend on Bransford Avenue. The restaurant is a cute place where people cook their own breakfast on a griddle built into your table. The nephews, 4 and 12, had a great time experiencing that. They have a gluten free pancake mix that was really good and all you can eat for $6.99 adults, kids 10 and under are $4.99. Of course to avoid cross contamination everyone at your table has to eat gluten free, but when you’re buying for the nephews, they can eat what you get ;-)

Lenny’s Sub Shop fills the Philly cheesesteak void

So, I haven’t been eating out at all recently so sorry no updates! I did run out to lunch today though and grabbed one of my favorite things, the grilled steak salad at Lenny’s. I use to love philly cheese steaks and well, not I miss them. Thanks to Lenny’s, now I can basically have one, just without the bread. After a year of not having a philly cheese steak… you won’t miss the bread at all!
